Excerpted from Insider Business Journal, July 20, 2001 When an issue arises within a company that the employer or executive would like outside assistance with, business coaches are a popular solution. Most coaches specialize in a particular area of business, and have specific problem solving and consulting skills. Jeannette Seibly, Principal of SeibCo, LLC, has been a full-time business coach at her company for nine years and has more than 20 years of experience in human resource management and business. With an economic downturn in business, you may have started feeling the pinch. Budgets have been slashed. Training and development dollars suspended. Travel curtailed. Salaries decreased. Expenses reduced. During this time, some executives will succeed financially while others will fail. While it's not a law of life that one must fail during a downturn, people who are afraid to learn and give it all they've got could find their personal financial growth negatively impacted. Those succeeding find their success depends upon their attitude and their ability to use this time as an opportunity to increase their business savvy. Are You a Good Team Member?

The following is a reprint from The Insider Journal (June 16-29, 2000) offering some suggestions on Balancing Chaos in Your Life while achieving the results you need as a busy business executive. There are times in a professional person’s life, when he wonders if he’s in the right career, if she owns the right company, and are they making the right decisions. Or, knows this is not the right career, boss, company, and/or employees. It makes a person wonders if it’s better to shuck it all and be a beach bum in Key West. This happens to most professionals, from time-to-time, throughout any organization. Why? We live in a busy world where chaos is the norm. Change is expected and not always welcomed. Results we predicted are not happening. Customers, both internally and externally, are demanding more without necessarily giving anything back. We are left questioning our decisions on a daily basis. Is your business successful? Are you being responsible for learning your business and open to the changes necessary for it to grow and thrive? Are you training your employees on how to be better "entrepreneurs"? Are you hiring the right people to join your team? As business owners, we have our dreams and have been thinking about them and living them for a long while. We then hire people that are needed to support our vision and forget they don't have the same dreams. They have their own dreams. It doesn't mean that can't support our company's vision and mission, it simply means they are not on the same page as us or even in the same paragraph. It's simply a lack of communication and focus on the training and development necessary to grow. The result? Your business is not operating at full potential. Employees leave the company and "bad mouth" it to 250 of their closest friends and family. Quotes are under priced and products given away unnecessarily. Goals, are not achieved, if ever established. Mistakes are not being resolved to the satisfaction of your customers. You're working too many hours and have an unrealistic expectation that others should as well. Operational changes are based on a "new flavor of the month" concept. Seven Reasons to Hire a Business Coach

Insider Business Journal October 1999 co-authored with John Agno The complexity of the marketplace demands agile enterprises and executives. More companies are flattening their organizational charts, reengineering and outsourcing business processes, working closely with their supply chains, erasing job boundaries, implementing functional and cross-functional work teams, hiring knowledgeable outside contractors and using virtual employees. To cope with this rapid rate of change, many executives are seeking coaching and counseling support. So what is a coach? Unlike mentoring (a process where a highly visible and experienced company executive advises a rising star), you don't normally see coaches…but they are ever present. Coaches are frequently drawn from the outside and provide individual executive support and consultation on both personal and business matters. Some executives have called their weekly coaching sessions "just-in-time" career management seminars. |
